Medicaid is a state and federal funded program that provides financial assistance to individuals. Even though this program receives some funding by the federal government, its eligibility requirements and benefit programs are established by each state. Medicaid is an ever changing program and in November 2007 Medicaid rules and eligibility have changed in the state of Florida. |
One change that will affect many is the new look back period. “The look back period,” is a phrase you will hear when you are applying for Medicaid. This was just changed in November 2007 from 3 years to 5 years.
Medicaid will look back at your assets and financial transactions in the past 5 years. This is why it is never too soon to start the planning process for Medicaid.
Medicaid has several benefit programs and each has specific eligibility requirements. Some benefit programs commonly used by seniors are: Medicaid Institutionalized Care Program (referred to as ICP or Nursing Home Medicaid), Medicaid Diversion Program, Medicaid Waiver Program and Medicaid OSS. Individuals must meet specific criteria and eligibility requirements in addition to Medicaid qualifications.

Please check the eligibility criteria for each waiver on this site and/or at the local Medicaid office. Not all counties adopt these waivers.
